Calls to identify toddler’s body

GREYMONT – Sophiatown police and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo encourage the public to come forward to identify a toddler's body that was discovered in a park.

The body of a toddler, estimated to be that of a three-year-old, was discovered in Greymont Park on 29 December in the early hours of the morning.

Johannesburg City Parks and Sophiatown police are concerned that no one has come forward to claim or identify the body.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo marketing manager, Jenny Moodley said they have been in contact with the Sophiatown police regarding the discovery.

“Sophiatown police are investigating the matter, however, the custodians or parents of the toddler or any person missing a toddler, are yet to come forward to claim the child. City Parks and Zoo is appealing to any person with any knowledge of a child they saw over the holidays, that is now missing, to come forward with any information that will lead to the identification of the little boy. This will ensure that we provide him with a dignified burial,” said Moodley.

She added that the city’s parks were randomly patrolled by park rangers and the Metro police, with added support from private security companies, where possible.

Moodley would also like to remind park users that the city’s parks are closed between sunrise and sunset. Use of the parks outside these hours is illegal. She encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity in parks and stressed that any person using the parks after sunset can be reported to the Metro police.

Sophiatown police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, TJ de Bruyn said the deceased toddler’s case was still under investigation and the child had not yet been identified. The cause of death is still unknown. He encouraged anyone with information to please come forward.
