Community works together to bring criminals to book

MONTGOMERY PARK – Sophiatown police arrest two suspects who were found in possession of stolen items.

The community, Suburban Crime Prevention (SCP) and Sophiatown police worked together to arrest two suspects after they stole water meters and City Power mini-substation fuses.

Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn of Sophiatown Police Station said the suspects were arrested at Westpark Cemetery on 18 January and were taken into custody.

“The suspects appeared in Newlands Magistrates’ Court on 19 January and were charged with possession of suspected stolen property. “The case is still under investigation,” said De Bruyn.

Suburban Crime Prevention director Clive Maher said the suspects attempted to escape when they were spotted. “Some members of the community, the SCP, Montgomery Park Patrollers and the Roosevelt Patrollers attempted to catch them for a long time until they were finally captured at Westpark Cemetery,” said Maher.

“Fuses stolen from Gibbons Place Street, a water meter from a house in Roosevelt Park and City Power substation fuses were all retrieved. January has been a quiet month. This was the first serious crime incident that’s happened since the beginning of the year.”
