A whopping 296 distinctions, 40 for Mathematics and 22 for Science, is what Northcliff High School proudly greets their 2016 matrics with.
On 5 January, as the National Senior Certificate’s results were handed over to each public school learner (or parent), with their results, and distinctions, listed.
Of the school’s 290 Matric pupils, all but one passed, giving the school a 99.6 per cent pass rate.
The cream of the crop, Nikolaos Anastasopoulos, finished high school with eight distinctions and an average of 90 per cent. He plans to study Computer or Actuarial Science this year.
Hashna Jeaven, however, was the top achiever with an average of 93 per cent and seven distinctions. She plans to complete a degree in Actuarial Science.
Northcliff High’s deputy principal and head of academics, Lorna Clinning, said the achievement was an all-round effort.
“Everybody, parents, teachers, managers, learners, pulled together and made it a team effort,” she said.
Anastasopoulos was the only learner to achieve eight distinctions. Seven learners got seven distinctions, four learners obtained six and 10 learners got five distinctions. Despite these achievements, 77 per cent of the matricluants got more than 50 per cent for Mathematics, 93 per cent got more than 50 per cent for English and 81,3 per cent qualified to study towards a bachelor’s degree.
