Intruder shot dead at retirement village

WESTDENE – Residents at retirement village in Westdene say they are living in fear.

Residents at the Eeufees Oord Old Age Home in Westdene said that they are living in fear of violent crime, after one of its residents shot and killed an alleged robber on 15 December.

Resident Jean Marais (77) told News24 that the intruder was standing 1m away from him and was holding a screwdriver, when Marais shot him with his pistol.

Marais said residents at the home were living in fear.

Chairperson of the home, Haroon Patel told News24 he had hand-delivered a letter to City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba asking for help regarding the lack of security measures at the home.

According to News24, the Mayor’s Office has no record of receiving the letter, but endeavored to ensure that the Metro Police were fully equipped and able to combat crime in Joburg.
