UDATE: Police open inquest into Westdene man’s death

WESTDENE – A man is found dead in a kneeling position, with a wire around his neck, in a Westdene servitude.

Police have opened an inquest into the death of a man in a Westdene servitude.

The man’s body was found in a kneeling position with a steel wire around his neck near Chichester Road at about 10.20am today (3 December).

“We were informed about the incident from a resident who called the Sophiatown Police,” said Gauteng Police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela.

“At the moment we cannot confirm if it was a murder or suicide. The identity of the man, [his] age and where he is from is still unknown. Details about the cause will be revealed after a post mortem and investigation is complete. You can never know the reasons behind these kind of incidents, we cannot just assume. We have opened an inquest.”

According to resident Anton Mostert, his neighbour’s gardening service workers found the man. It is not known how long he had been there.

A security company was immediately called to the scene. Neither Mostert nor his neighbour knew who the man was.

Makhubela asked that if any community members know anything about the incident, that they should come forward and assist the police with information.

This is a developing story. More information will be published as soon as it becomes available.
