Dr Seuss marathon

JOBURG – The People's Theatre welcomes young and old audiences to come and enjoy the Dr Seussical the Musical Jr.

Dr Seuss fanatics will be glad to know that the classic stories from the book are brought to life in the Dr Seussical the Musical Jr. The opening of the show took place on 1 November and will run until 24 December at the People’s Theatre.

Dr Seuss has been one of children’s favourite authors for over 60 years, and has been an encouraging factor to children’s reading, introducing them to an exciting range of characters and positives lessons. These include The Cat in the Hat, Horton hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham and much more.

The musical is directed by Keith Smith and Jill Girard who said they have combined the funniest stories and craziest Dr Seuss creatures, blended with rhyme, rhythm and sensational music. The cast has 21 members of seven adults and 14 children who are divided into two groups and perform on alternate days.

“Most people grew up with Dr Seuss stories and everyone can find something to relate to within the play. The theme of the show instills that everyone is considered important regardless of their role in society and is something that all audiences can relate to. During the week we mostly have youth groups, children’s programmes and schools who we have a good relationship with. We also have a variety of audiences during the weekend who are young and old,” said Girard.

She added that, so far, they have received great feedback from audiences. Schools have also integrated the show into their school exercises as a learning experience.

“We try to encourage children from a young age to watch stage productions, turn it into something that they grow up doing and encourage their parents to watch more stage productions. We also work hard to produce material that is entertaining and interesting. It is important to us to discover new talent and nurture old talent,” said Girard.

The Dr Seussical the Musical Jr times are from Monday to Friday 9am and 11am. On Saturday 10.30pm and 2.30pm including public holidays.
