Community works together

LINDEN – Linden police members encourage the community to donate items for their Shoe Box Project.

Members of the South African Police Service shared the festive spirit by collecting items and placing them in boxes for their Shoe Box Project.
These items are donated to members and organisations in the community who are in need.
Captain Sandra Veeran and Warrent Officer Tania Vermeulen are passionate about putting a smile on children’s faces. Veeran said they have been involved in the project for the past three years and they collect items throughout the year.
“We create a hamper for children, filled with different items that are donated to creches, places of safety and orphanages within the Linden area. There are various sponsors who contribute towards our project, such as King’s School who donated 40 boxes and Rawson Properties who donated over 45 care packages filled with toiletries, sweets and toys. People also donate crocheted items and cosmetics as well as baby and adult clothing,” said Veeran.
She added they also collect non-perishable items, groceries and bedding from friends and family.

They plan on handing out the boxes early in December when representatives from the various organisations will collect the boxes.
“Through my line of work I’ve been exposed to a number of disadvantaged children and believe that a child should not go without. We appreciate the support we’ve received from the Linden police, organisations and the community,” said Veeran.
Vermeulen said the most challenging aspect of the Shoe Box Project is when people promise to donate items and they don’t keep to the agreement. She enjoys giving back to children’s homes who really appreciate what they do for them. “We encourage the community to donate any items they don’t need or want,” she concluded.
