UPDATE: Conflicting reports surrounding death of UJ student
JOHANNESBURG - Counselling has been arranged for the family and other residents of the building.
A University of Johannesburg student was allegedly shot by a security guard at a private student accommodation on the early hour of 5 November.

According to reports, 21-year-old Kelvin Baloyi was shot and killed by a security officer working at the private accommodation following an argument.

Colonel Noxolo Kweza of Johannesburg Central Police Station said that suspect fled the scene and that a manhunt had been launched. “The alleged incident happened at a private student accommodation during the early hours.”

Kweza explained that the security guard was employed privately by the owner of the accommodation and that both the property where the incident took place and the guards have nothing to do with the University of Johannesburg. “However, the owner is working with the police to look for the suspect.”
However, according to latest reports, Baloyi was not shot by a security guard, housing company Afhco said earlier today.
“The individual, unknown to Afhco, appears to have entered the property at the same time as security guards employed by SNG Security,” Africa Housing Company said in a statement.
The security company was contracted to have two uniformed, unarmed security guards at an end-of-year party at the residence in Rissik Street, central Johannesburg. Afhco owns the building.
Afhco said it did not allow security guards to carry weapons on its properties and it was unclear why that individual was armed.
It said they were working closely with police. Counselling had been arranged for the family and other residents of the building.
