School for creatives in Joburg

JOBURG – Widely regarded a new campus is coming to town.

The widely regarded Red & Yellow School, which has operated successfully in Cape Town for the past 22 years, is arriving in Johannesburg next year.

During its 22 years of teaching, Red & Yellow School has produced a long pedigree of graduates, many of them giants in the advertising and marketing industries today, and has achieved dozens of creative awards.

Two of these Red & Yellow hall-of-famers, who graduated from the school in 2007, are Veli Ngubane, entrepreneur and founding partner of the integrated marketing agency Avatar; and Kamini Pather, winner of Masterchef South Africa.

The Red & Yellow School, once settled in Johannesburg, will bring its popular three-year diploma in Graphic Design and Art Direction (GDAD) to its new campus next year.

The school’s Johannesburg campus will be located in one of the iconic buildings in the heart of the city centre, 84 Albertina Sisulu Street, and will be an integral part of the current creative, downtown revival and rejuvenation that is underway.

Lyndi Lawson-Smith, Johannesburg campus director explained, “Students will not only learn the theory they need but will develop a broad range of skills that will enable them to pursue any number of creative career opportunities.

“The conceptually driven nature of the programme ensures the longevity of the qualification and its relevance to employers.”

Carmen Schaefer, who oversees the GDAD programme at the Cape Town campus, emphasised that the studio environment and lecturer review teaching methodology mimic what it’s like to work in the industry.

With Braamfontein, Maboneng and Newtown housing thousands of creatives in the city, they are sure to hone their skills at the new school for left-brain thinkers.
