Is your home summer ready?

JOHANNESBURG - Considering the adverse weather conditions this region experiences, is your garden and home secure for summer?

After quite a frosty winter, we’re sure you can’t wait to get back to the outdoors and soak up some sun!

But, is your garden ready for summer considering the adverse weather conditions our region experiences?

Rain, wind, hail and lightning can have devastating consequences for your home. Fortunately, you can take precautions to protect your house.

Clean out gutters

Remove leaves, sticks and other debris from gutters, so rainwater can flow and drain freely. If your gutters are clogged, rain can seep into the house, causing water to drip from the ceiling and walls.

Install gutter guards

Gutter guards prevent debris from getting into the gutter and interfering with water flowing away from the house.

Trim trees and remove dead branches

Heavy winds and storms could cause weak trees or branches to break free and damage your home or car, or injure someone walking by your property.

Repair steps and handrails

Slippery or broken stairs and banisters can become deadly when wet.

Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations

Use sealant to seal cracks and other wall openings to prevent moisture from entering your home.

Protect against lighting

Storms and lightning can damage your electrical system. You can protect your wiring and devices by installing surge protectors on your plugs.

Perform general structural maintenance

Check the outside and inside of your home for any visible sign of wear and tear. Damp or rotten wood might be a sign that a professional needs to inspect your roof for any broken tiles or that your roof needs extra waterproof sealing.

Cover outside furniture

If at all possible, keep your outside furniture covered under a patio or lapa. A hail warning might not give you enough time to come back home to secure your belongings.
