UPDATE: Two students arrested for violating court order during #FeesMustFall protest

JOHANNESBURG - Despite vice chancellor Adam Habib’s announcement that classes at Wits University will resume today, protests have erupted on the main campus.

Students have returned to class after police fired several stun grenades at a group of about 50 protestors.

Wits Senior Communications Officer, Shirona Patel has confirmed that two students have been arrested, student leader, Busisiwe Seabe is one of the arrested.

This comes after Wits Vice Chancellor, Professor Adam Habib said in a statement earlier that the university’s academic program would resume and police would assist them to do so.

Protesting students dispersed and ran into the Matrix building where police gathered at the door. One student shouted at police to return her scarf. Police then searched the campus trying to find more of the protestors.

One lecturer stood on the steps of the Great Hall and told police that the institution was for learning and that violence was not welcome.
