Wits sports awards cancelled

JOBURG – Amidst the recent violent protests occurring at Wits University, successful sportsmen will be disappointed.

Students protests cause the University of the Witwatersrand’s Annual Sports Awards Dinner to be postponed.

The sports awards were scheduled for 29 September but according to the university, “We have, after extensive consultation between staff and students, taken a decision in the midst of the current student protest action on campuses around the country to postpone the event until further notice”

This announcement comes shortly after the Wits worker who died due to carbon dioxide poisoning was named, see the story HERE.

The university advised that they will communicate as to other alternatives to honour students who represented Wits at the highest sporting level this past year.

Student protests have moved to Wits’ sister university UJ.
