WARNING: Major water shutdown as burst pipe floods streets

CRESTA – Joburg residents can expect a major water shutdown in the next few hours.

Johannesburg Water has issued a warning of a “major shutdown” in numerous suburbs, after a burst pipe flooded parts of Republic Road and Judges Avenue in Cresta.

Some cars were left stranded in knee-deep water and had to be towed to dry land, after gushing water tore up the road leaving holes and debris for motorists to dodge through rush-hour traffic.

“Johannesburg Water is aware and has dispatched technicians to a burst water site on the corner of Republic Road and Judges Avenue in Cresta,” said the entity’s external communications officer, Eleanor Mavimbela. “The immediate action is to shut off supply to avoid more flooding on the roads, which is currently affecting traffic.”

Mavimbela continued, “Our Yeoville Reservoir is also running low and almost empty following a power failure incident at the Swartkoppies pump station. Power has now been restored and supply resumed however it will take quite some time for normal supply and pressure to be restored to Yeoville, Berea, Linksfield, Hilbrow, Bellevue and surroundings. Water tankers are currently being deployed to the affected areas. We will update residents on the developments. Johannesburg Water apologises for the inconvenience to consumers.”
