Wits students plan a campus shutdown

Following Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande’s suggestion that university fees increase no more than eight percent for 2017, students at Wits University launched a campus shutdown.

Nzimande made this speech in Pretoria as students gathered in baited breath to hear his announcement.

The less than pleased students gathered in Solomon Mhlangu House, Wits where they listened to the announcement Nzimande made over an intercom. In his speech he announced that it would be up to universities to decide their own fee increases for 2017.

In lieu of his speech, the Wits senior executive team sent out an email pleading students not to use violence, arson or destroy property, which has been witnessed on campuses across the country in recent weeks.

“We respect the rights of those who may wish to protest around these issues, provided that it does not infringe on the rights of those who wish to learn and work. All protests should be undertaken in line with the University’s rules and the rights and responsibilities of all, as outlined in our Constitution.” said wits senior executive team.
