Wall collapses and leaves man with broken legs

NEWLANDS – A man is left in a critical condition after a wall collapses on him.

A 49-year-old man broke both his legs after a wall he was working on, collapsed on him.

The incident happened in Newlands on the morning of 14 September.

“It is understood that the man was working in the area with colleagues at the time of the accident,” said ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing Harduth. She said the man apparently used a sledgehammer to break down the wall, and while doing so, the wall collapsed on him.

“Colleagues removed the rubble that had fallen on him,” she added. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the man lying on the ground. Harduth said that upon assessment, it was found that he was in a serious condition and was treated and transported to the hospital for further medical care.

Ward 82 councillor Susan Steward, said the incident was not reported to her. “I suspect I did not get the report because it is not a municipal-related incident,” she said.

Newlands Community Patrol chairperson, Gerda Lourens, said she also did not get any information on the incident but she will follow up.
