Worker rolled up in carpet during robbery

LINDEN – Robbers get away with hunting rifle containing live rounds.

A domestic worker was left tied up and rolled up in a carpet after robbers targeted two units in one complex in the suburb.

Three suspects gained entrance to the complex on 9 September by lifting the gate off its rails. Linden police spokesperson, Captain Walter Spencer, said the three men went into the first unit and found a domestic worker cleaning outside. “They tied the woman up and stole a TV from the first unit.”

Spencer said they then proceeded to the second unit where they found another staff member. “They tied her up as well, and rolled her up in a carpet.” The domestic worker in the second unit was with her employer who was breastfeeding in the bedroom. The employer heard the screams but could not do anything as she was with her baby.

Spencer said the robbers then gained entry to the employer’s bedroom when they found a safe and demanded a key to it. “The employer did not have it on the premises,” said Spencer. They then took a crowbar and removed the safe from the wall. “The safe contained a hunting rifle with live rounds, passports, birth certificates and jewellery.”

He added that they also forcefully pulled the woman’s wedding ring off her finger. They managed to get away with the safe and two TVs from both units. Fortunately, no one was harmed. “The baby is well and the victims received counselling from the Linden Police Victim Support Unit,” concluded Spencer.
