HIP2B² and 3M are searching for Grade 9 and 10 masterminds and innovators for the 2016 HIP2B² 3M Innovation Challenge.

HIP2B² and 3M are searching for Grade 9 and 10 masterminds and innovators for the 2016 HIP2B² 3M Innovation Challenge.

The competition aims to unearth the best technological ideas the youth has to offer as well as the most innovative solutions they may have for everyday problems.

Pupils can present their solutions under the following categories:

  • How we get from place to place
  •  How we stay healthy
  • How we stay safe
  •  How to make everyday tasks easier.

Gina Cohen, customer innovation centre host and customer engagement specialist in business services operations said, “The previous challenges were a great success and made a significant impact on those pupils who participated. The ideas of young people should be encouraged, not ignored.”

Grade 9 and 10 pupils from all provinces in South Africa are encouraged to pair up and enter their innovative solutions to a real problem which affects them, their family or their community, using science and maths applications.

The closing date for entries is 30 September and the finalists for each province will be selected by judges from HIP2B2, 3M as well as other industry experts. The final will take place on 30 November and prizes include a laptop for each winner, a laptop for the teacher of the winning pupils and R10 000 worth of equipment awarded to the pupils’ school labs.

3M is a science-based company which created popular brands such as Post-it Notes, Scotch Tape and Scotchgard. HIP2B2 is an organisation which promotes the study of maths, science and technology.
