BREAKING: Woman sets newborn baby alight

WESTDENE – Eyewitness catches girls in the act of burning a baby.

A 24-year old woman was arrested this morning after an eyewitness, who saw a newborn baby being burnt in a passageway, called the police.

On the morning of 14 September, at the corner of Perth and Fifth avenues in Westdene, the eyewitness saw a young woman allegedly burning something with sticks. The eyewitness then eventually saw that it was a baby and called the Community Police Forum for help.

Sophiatown police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, confirmed the incident happened at 10.30am. He said the witness alerted the police and CPF, and the K9 Unit responded.

“They found a partially burnt baby wrapped in a maroon blanket,” said De Bruyn.

He said the police cannot confirm whether the baby was dead or alive before it was burnt, and the autopsy will determine that information.

“The suspect was arrested and charged with concealment of birth and the autopsy will determine what other charges are included,” concluded de Bruyn.
