The medicine of the future will be skin deep

New drug developments show that the pharmaceutical drugs of the future will be target specific and administered under the skin.

Science fiction movies do enough to feed the imagination ideas of advanced medical procedures and the pharmaceuticals of the future.

However, according to Times Live, some medical advancements may not be too far away.

Times Live reported that Dr Konji Sebati, CEO of the Innovative Pharmaceutical Association South Africa, said there are currently exciting developments in pharmaceutical drugs that are in clinical trials or will soon move to a trial stage.

Forget eye drops, with these new developments, a dissoluble contact lens will be the future of eye treatment as clinical trials should start in the next year or so. Administering medication will also be easier as implantable drug delivery systems can be used to target specific areas of the body, for example in chemotherapy.

Additionally, new medication is being designed to allow the immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells. Other medicinal developments include research into drugs that will survive in the digestive system for longer so that the body has more time and opportunity to absorb the medication.

“There are some truly exciting innovations out there. Technology is advancing at a rapid rate and its application in the area of pharmaceuticals means there is hope for some great breakthroughs in the years and months ahead,” Sebati reportedly said.
