Life through a woman’s eyes

AUCKLAND PARK – The play, For colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is not enuf, is to be shown at UJ.

UJ Arts & Culture wraps up Women’s Month with the Standard Bank Ovation award-winning production, For colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is not enough.

Directed by the very passionate and knowledgeable Tshego Khutsoane, this play follows the lives of various women and talks about major themes each one faces through their life.

The play is an adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s first works that was an acclaimed theatre piece. Khutsoane said that her play is the reimagining of Shange’s narrative. “This is a coming of age play about young women.”

She added that the play is not colour-focussed and that it is meant to talk to women of any ethnicity. The applied theatre practitioner explained that the cast is made up of students who do not have a background in drama.

She said that the play also speaks about what young women at UJ struggle with. It talks about what women want to say about where they are in life, along with pop culture and social commentary.

Khutsoane studied applied theatre which is often the practice of drama in an educational, community or therapeutic context. It is also not necessarily acted out by people who view themselves to be artists.

She expressed her longing for women, and people in general to find positive outlets to communicate whatever it is that they are feeling.”Applied drama calls out to anyone with a passion for saying something.”

To young women out there battling to find their space in an ever-changing society, she had these words to impart, “I employ them to never give up in seeking the spaces they desires, young women should freely find their space in society and find ways to channel their passions.”

Opening night for the show is on 25 August and it will run on 26,27,28 August and on 1 and 2 September.
