Casa do Sol heads to Austria!

LINDEN – Casa do Sol School pupils will head to Austria to compete in the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017.

Casa do Sol School  pupils prepare themselves for the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017.

The school was elated to announce that six of their pupils were selected to participate in the special event which takes place in March.

The pupils, who range between the ages of 15 and 19 years, will all be skating in their designated categories.

Teacher at the school and skate coach, Lindi van Vuuren explained that there were a series of qualifiers that had to be faced before they could be invited to participate.

“Two years prior to the Special Olympics, I kept a record of all the pupils who displayed skater potential in their time with me, from that selection, we started training for the event,” said Van Vuuren.

She added that at the provincial games all the pupils who received either gold or silver medals were called the advancement team. These winners kept up with practice and eventually competed at the National Games.

“Our six pupils were selected from the National Games,” said Van Vuuren.

The team has skaters who are either figure skaters or speed skaters.

“All the figure skaters will concentrate on skills like dips and lifts and swizzles, while speed skating could be compared to running long distance on the ice,” she explained.

To practise their ice skating, the pupils would do so at the Northgate Ice Rink, every Thursday free of charge.

Assisting Van Vuuren are two volunteer coaches.

“We feel very fortunate that our pupils did so well, everyone is now is in the process of making preparations for the trip and the event,” said Van Vuuren.

All the pupils felt that this is one of the best things that could happen to them. They expressed that they looked forward to having an awesome time and doing their level best.
