Adult school gets spoilt with paint and furniture

BRIXTON – The Thuso Sports Development Centre donates library equipment and joins with community to paint an adult school in Brixton.

The Herbert Mdingi Adult Learning School in Brixton has been running low on resources for years and they have finally received donations of furniture and paint from various donors.

Thuso Phecheni, chairperson of the NPO, the Thuso Sports Development Centre and lab support staff at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Kingsway campus, made the donation on 13 August. Phecheni organised students from the UJ Doornfontein campus, 10 church members from the Faith Ministry Church, school teachers and community members to come and help paint the school.

The UJ students donated most of the paint and the painting materials that were used on the day. “This is our way of assisting and giving back to the community,” said Phecheni. People came out in numbers and had fun painting the walls of the school. “It was a joint operation in giving back and uplifting the community of Brixton and surrounding areas supported by the school,” he added.

The Thuso Sports Development Centre also donated office and library equipment to support learning at the school. Phecheni said that his organisation values the importance of education and works towards helping communities that lack study facilities. “Using computers is also a challenge to many disadvantaged students,” he said. It all started in 2005 when Phecheni donated 25 computers to a school in the North West and since then, many other schools have put in requests to be helped as well.

Phecheni said that the organisation has been getting requests from various schools and communities in and outside Gauteng and that any help would be appreciated for them to make a difference to the learning process.
