Little chairs for big dreamers

BRIXTON – The Ann Latsky Nursing College delivers chairs to Vuka Daycare and gets the warmest reception from the children.

The Ann Latsky Nursing College  donated chairs to Vuka Daycare centre in Slovo Park. The momentous day was on 12 August and the children were ecstatic to receive the generous, much-needed donation.

Stompie Grace Makgoana, a teacher at the centre said she was very thankful for the donation from the college. “Receiving these chairs means a great deal to us; although we do have chairs, there are not enough for all the children,” said Makgoana.

The day care has operated for the past seven years and caters to children as young as four-months old This would not be the first donation the centre received. For Mandela Day, Makgoana explained that students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ)  painted walls and fitted windows in their container classroom. She added that they were able to prepare meals for the children but now that donations have stopped, they cannot prepare meals for the children, any longer.

Tryphina Selebogi, a nursing lecturer at the college, said this donation was a way to further their Mandela Day contributions. “We saw a need for chairs, when we came here on Mandela Day to donate food parcels,” explained Selebogi. She said it was sad to see the children sitting on the cold ground as they had their daily lessons.

Selebogi added that a committee from the college was formed to do such acts of kindness for communities in need. The committee is in its fourth year of aid.

She divulged that they saw a need for this committee when they would visit clinics such as Crosby Clinic and see people who were in desperate need of help.

“We want to help the community and cater to the needs of neighbourhoods around the college,” said Selebogi.

Selebogi concluded that the college has adopted various primary schools around the area, which they assist with stationery and food parcels.
