First council meeting postponed

JOBURG –The inaugural council meeting has been postponed.

The inaugural council meeting that was originally set for today (16 August) has been postponed to 22 August.

The meeting, that will see the election of a chief whip, speaker and executive mayor has been postponed due to possible negotiations between political parties, which are still underway.

Virgil James, the City spokesperson, confirmed that the meeting is set for 22 August and confirmed that the above-mentioned election will take place.

City manager Trevor Fowler will preside over the council until a speaker is elected.

“Thereafter the newly elected speaker will preside over the council, which will then elect the executive mayor and chief whip,” he said. Parties have 14 days after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced the results on 6 August to form a government.

He also said a handover report, induction and orientation programmes will be tabled for the councillors. “The orientation programme, which will take place over three days from 22 August, will deal with legislation guiding municipalities and general governance,” he said.

The second council meeting is still set for 8 September.
