Man murdered after car accident

SOPHIATOWN – Police are expecting to make arrests soon.

A 27-year-old man was murdered in Newclare at about 1.30am on 31 July.

When the police arrived on the scene, Junaid Mohammed was being examined by paramedics. He died on scene due to injuries sustained in his upper body from an unknown object. Witnesses on the scene said that there had been a car accident which led to the drivers getting into an argument and a fight. The suspect was not found on the scene and the Sophiatown Police are still on the lookout for the murder suspect.

Sophiatown Police have also been dealing with an increase in robberies in the Newlands and Westdene areas.

There have been a number of muggings and the police are urging the community to keep their phones and other valuables out of sight while walking in the streets.

In the early morning hours of 30 July, a woman was approached by two men while walking in Westdene. She was threatened with a knife and her cellphone was taken from her. Sophiatown Police corporate communications officer, Lieutenant Colonel Julia Claassen said that the suspects are known to the victim and there will be an arrest after a formal investigation.

In another incident, a man was approached by three men in Newlands. He was threatened with a knife and has his phone was stolen. In Newclare a woman was overpowered by two men and a phone was stolen.

Lt Col Claassen said that the robbers are usually known to the victims. “Investigations are still going on and arrests are expected to be made soon,” she concluded.
