Billions of rands lost under Tau’s administration – Mashaba

JOBURG – Mashaba continues to make damning allegations about the City of Joburg as he battles to win the City ahead of the local government elections.

JOBURG – Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba, claims that the City of Joburg’s financial stability is declining. As the election campaigns intensify with less than a month left before residents cast their votes, the DA continues to make a damning accusation about Mayor Parks Tau.

According to the statement by Herman Mashaba, the City was rated 37 out of 100 by the rating agency, Ratings Afrika, while Cape Town scored 75 – the highest out of all eight metro municipalities.

“This is because where the DA governs municipal finances are managed stringently, and we deliver the biggest basket of free services to the poor,” said Mashaba.

“His attempt to hide the true state of Joburg’s financial mess behind the Moody’s credit-ratings upgrade earlier this year is completely disingenuous,” he continued.

Mashaba claimed that the City’s financial management was a mess. “This year alone the financial portfolio wrote off over R8.4 billion in debt. This money could have built over 80 000 houses for the people of Joburg,” explained Mashaba.

The opposition party alleged that the City’s billing system was still in disarray with residents often complaining about incorrect bills, which were not accounted for.

“I will use zero-based budgeting in which the budget is built from scratch and every line item has to be approved. This way, large-scale tender corruption will be consigned to the past,” he concluded.
