UJ choir concerts with Canadian choir

AUCKLAND PARK – The UJ Choir to collaborate with the Edmonton Youth Choir later this month.

The UJ Choir will be in concert with Canada’s Edmonton Youth and Children’s Choir at 7pm on the 15 July. The two choirs will join forces and deliver a stellar show on African soil as they perform at the Hervormde Kerk in Westdene.

UJ Choir’s western music conductor, Renette Bouwer, said, “As the UJ Choir, one of our passion points is having the ability to share our cultural versatility with the youth abroad. The opportunity that exists when one is open to cultural infusion is one which cannot be argued,” explained Bouwer.

The Edmonton Children’s Choir was founded in 1993 by Anne McIntyre and is the oldest choir in the Edmonton Youth and Children’s Choir family. The choir focuses on advanced, unaccompanied music and tours. Under the artistic directive of Dr John Wiebe, the choir has competed successfully in festivals and competitions across Canada and Europe, recording three CDs, thus far.

Its mission is to introduce audiences to the beauty and power of their music and to develop strong characters with insight, cultural awareness, respect and self-discipline.

“The UJ Choir, led by maestro, Sidumo Nyamezele, will give their visiting Canadian choir a taste of Africa as it performs its African repertoire. Over the years, the UJ Choir has grown in magnitude, acquiring accolades and gaining prominence on both the national and international fronts,” said UJ Arts and Culture associate, Zithobile Shabalala.

Tickets are R20 and you can e-mail: choir@uj.ac.za for bookings.
