Five-month-old baby and mother survive fall down manhole

NEWCLARE – Mother and child survive a fall down an open manhole.

Mumsy Ngwenya and a her five-month-old baby survived a fall down a manhole in Newclare.

The incident happened on the morning of 13 July when the mother and baby were walking to the doctor’s office along Hamilton Road.

The mother carried the baby on her back as they walked on the road.

Husband of Ngwenya, John Ndlhamini, said that his wife was walking on the road when she saw a car coming toward her. “She then tried to avoid the car but ended up falling into the manhole as it was not closed properly,” said the distraught husband.

The Newclare resident explained that his wife was assisted by members of the community, who helped get her out the hole. He received a ‘please call’ me from his wife’s number and he immediately called back. “When I answered they said that my wife had fallen down a manhole; I rushed there as quick as I could,” said Ndlhamini.

ER24 arrived and assisted in transporting the mother to Helen Joseph Hospital. Ndlhamini said that their baby suffered no injuries although he was very worried about his wife’s health. “I spent the day at the hospital waiting to hear about my wife. After X-rays doctors found that she was well to go home, and just suffered scratches to her legs,” said Ndlhamini.
