Pikitup MD investigated; placed on leave

JOBURG - Pikitup has appointed Johannesburg Water MB as the acting MB of Pikitup until further notice.

Pikitup’s MD, Amanda Nair, has been placed on special leave and is expected to attend an internal enquiry after “allegations of impropriety” were investigated at Pikitup.

Meanwhile, Joburg Water’s MD, Lungile Dhlamini, has been appointed as acting MD for Pikitup until further notice.

The City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ’s) MMC for Environment Infrastructure and Services, Matshidiso Mfikoe and the Pikitup Board met with the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) on 5 July to make the outcome of the investigation public. In March, Samwu made allegations against Nair at CoJ and independent auditors were tasked to investigate, Mfikoe said. The findings of said investigation showed “weaknesses in internal policies” and “some wrongdoing in human resources and financial management.”

Nair will now face an internal enquiry to respond to the findings. She was also suspended in April 2014 for her alleged role in the awarding of a tender but cleared of all charges and reinstated in February 2015.

In November last year, Pikitup made headlines after recurring illegal strikes by its employees, about wage increases and disputes with Pikitup management, which led to service delivery failures across Johannesburg. At the End of April this year, the strikes finally came to an end.
