Molly’s monumental achievement

AUCKLAND PARK – Molly Jackson achieves in the English Olympiad.

Deutsche Internationale Schule pupil, Molly Jackson placed in the top 15 out of 8 000 entries for the English Olympiad.

The Grade 12 pupil explained just why this achievement is monumental to her and how this will lead to great opportunities in future.

She said that writing was something she has wanted to do all her life. “After I job-shadowed at a newspaper a couple of years ago, it sparked my love for investigative journalism which I hope to study next year. I absolutely love meeting new people, talking to interesting people and getting involved in different kinds of stories each day,” she said.

The theme for this year’s English Olympiad was The Darkness in Man’s Heart. She explained that she had to read and study extracts from various gothic novels and novellas which she enjoyed immensely. “I stayed after school once every week for a class with our amazing teacher Nathalie Alexandra,” said Jackson. She went on to praise Alexandra and said that her success is owed to her.

When asked how she hopes to impact her community she said that though her cause might be a clichè to some, she is passionate about equal rights. “I’m a proud supporter of gay rights, gender equality, racial equality, and through my writing and reporting my goal in life is to educate people about these issues and promote human rights,” said Jackson.

She explained that the olympiad was a written test that took place at each entrant’s school. She boasted that her parents have always encouraged her writing endeavours and motivated her to enter her story for the Eisteddfod, where she received an ambassador’s award. “I wouldn’t have entered at all if it hadn’t been for them, so I am extremely grateful,” said Jackson.
