Police rescue man from hole

LINDEN – A man was luckily not injured after he fell into a manhole.

A man was rescued after he fell into a manhole after exiting a taxi. The man believed to be in his late ’30s miraculously got out of the 3m-deep hole unscathed.

“Police patrollers were conducting their routine checks when they saw a group of community members huddled around looking down into a hole,” said Sergeant Orden Masumpa. “When they got there they saw that a man had fallen into a manhole.”

Captain Alex Vermaak explained that the man was getting out of a taxi in Linden on the corner of 4th Avenue and 1st Street when he stood on a concrete slab that was not secure.

“A slab was put over the manhole by residents who thought to cover it while there was construction in the road,” said Capt Vermaak.

Linden Police managed to help the man out with a ladder. “Thankfully the man was not injured after his very unexpected fall,” said Capt Vermaak.
