DA accused ANC of trying to stop its billboard advert

JOBURG – Democratic Alliance continued with its 'Jobs Not Jet' election campaign despite yesterday's intimidation.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) ‘Jobs Not Jet’ billboard was officially unveiled today as the political campaigns ahead of this year’s local government elections, intensified.

The party unveiled the poster today at Johannesburg CBD calling for the government to scrap the procurement of the presidential jet.

According to the party’s statement on 29 June late afternoon, a group of proclaimed ANC supporters attempted to stop the private company from putting up the billboard in central Johannesburg.

Party’s national spokesperson, Phumzile van Damme, said the private company that was ensuring the billboard was ready for its unveiling, was approached by a group who identified themselves as being from the African National Congress (ANC).

“This group demanded to know what was behind the blue sheet which currently covers the billboard. They proceeded to hurl rocks at the employees of the private company, and only left once security was called for assistance,” she said.

She further explained that the conduct was expressly prohibited by section 92 of the Electoral Act which demands that no person may deface or unlawfully remove any billboard, placard or poster published by a registered party or candidate.

“It is clear that they are trying to conceal the truth about Jacob Zuma’s skewed priorities. We will not be intimidated by their conduct. South Africans deserve to know about Jacob Zuma’s latest plans to enrich himself at the expense of 8.9 million jobless South Africans,” she said.

Meanwhile, the party leader, Mmusi Maimane, delivered the keynote address to supporters and was expected to hand over the memorandum to Luthuli House.
