Hyena mauls young boy

MILPARK – 15-year-old boy transported by helicopter to Milpark Hospital after attacked by a hyena at the Kruger National Park.

A visit to the South African National Parks (SANParks) turned for the worst when a 15 year-old-boy was attacked by a hyena.

The horrific attack occurred in the early morning of 26 June at the Kruger National Park.

The boy visited the park with his parents who set up camp at the Crocodile Bridge camp site.

In a statement SANParks published, the hyena was said to have entered the camp site at about 4.30am while the visitor was asleep in one of the tents. The boy was immediately rushed to the Medi Clinic in Nelspruit after receiving first aid service by a nurse who was also in the camp.

The Rangers then came to the camp to look for the hyena but could not find her. They did, however, find a hole under the parameter fence where the animal could have came in.

It has also been reported that the boy was then transported by helicopter to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg where he underwent plastic and reconstructive surgery to his mouth and jaw.

SANParks expressed their sincere regrets for the incident and sympathised with the family.
