Who shot the messenger?

AUCKLAND PARK – A messenger is in the ICU after he accidentally shoots himself.

On the morning of 20 June, a man had accidentally shot himself in the parking lot of Media 24.

According to Brixton SAPS spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, the man who is believed to be in his 40s, was an employed messenger. “On arrival it was explained to us that the man was taking his firearm out of his holster to take the magazine out,” said Backhoff.

She added that the man then took the firearm and pulled the trigger without knowing that there was still a bullet in the firearm.

Backhoff divulged that he had shot himself in the chest. “Paramedics were called to the scene and the man was taken to Milpark Hospital,” she said. The man is currently in ICU in a stable condition.

Though the firearm was licenced, SAPS found that it had expired. The firearm was then confiscated and was booked into the SAPS store.

Backhoff concluded that a case of negligent handling of a firearm has been opened and investigations in the matter are underway.
