Woman robbed at gunpoint as street robberies increase

BLAIRGOWRIE – Police warn residents to be vigilant while walking as street robberies were on the increase.

The police are urging residents to be on the look out when walking in the streets after a woman was robbed at gunpoint in Blairgowrie.

Captain Alex Vermaak confirmed that the Linden SAPS were investigating a case of armed robbery after a domestic worker was accosted by a female who held her, while an unknown male suspect pointed a gun at her. “They dragged her into a new white BMW and demanded to go to her house at which point the woman told her assailants that she lived in Alexandra,” Capt Vermaak said. He pointed out that the robbers then searched the victim’s bag and took a tablet, two cellphones, cash and bank cards. They then pushed her out of the car and fled the scene.

Capt Vermaak warned residents that criminals come in all shapes and sizes, which included women. “These criminals are targeting kind residents in order to rob them by asking for directions, time and in some instances the resident’s phone. What they want is to steal valuables such as phones, watches, and cash,” Capt Vermaak noted.

The Linden CPF chairperson Lara Bath said that they could see from the crime stats that street attacks and robberies were on the increase and warned residents to be vigilant when walking in the streets. “Take away the crime of opportunity by avoiding to carry valuables as this is what criminals are on the look out for,” Bath said. She also urged residents not to wear jewellery when walking in the streets as this is what criminals were on the lookout for.
