Suspended police officer arrested for robbery

NORTHCLIFF – Three suspects, including a suspended police officer, are in custody after allegedly robbing a man in Northcliff.

A suspended police officer and two accomplices were arrested after they allegedly robbed a pedestrian.

The suspended police officer from Sophiatown Police Station, was travelling with two other men in a white Toyota Corolla on 13 June. According to the customer relations manager at Beagle Watch Armed Response Anne Wood, the vehicle stopped in Pendoring Road, Northcliff, and one man got out of the vehicle to ask a pedestrian for directions and then dragged him into the car. “There were two guys in the car at the time and they were not armed,” Wood said.

She explained that the suspects claimed to know the victim and his friends. They allegedly robbed the man of his cellphone, wallet and cigarette lighter. Wood said that they drove around for half an hour before dropping the man off in another part of Northcliff.

Police officers were informed about the incident and were on the lookout for the suspects. While on patrol, a Beagle Watch guard spotted the vehicle with suspects matching the descriptions of those who committed the robbery. “The guard requested backup and the three suspects were successfully arrested at Cresta Shopping Centre,” said Wood.

Fairland Police spokesperson Constable Moloko Kgatla confirmed that a case of robbery was opened. “Three suspects were arrested and they will appear at the Newlands Magistrates’ Court on 17 June,” said Const Kgatla.

Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn was not immediately available for a comment, but questions were sent to him, and comment is awaited.
