A charter 50 years strong

NORTHCLIFF – Lions Club of Northcliff share just why its 50th Charter Anniversary is a milestone achievement, not just for them but the community too.

The Lions Club of Northcliff recently reached a milestone in their ongoing community service to a variety of needy organisations and individuals when they celebrated their 50th Charter Anniversary.

Communications officer of the club, Peter Wise said that Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organisation, will celebrate its centenary in Oak Brook, Illinois, next year. About 99 years ago, Lions founder, Melvin Jones gathered a group of like-minded Chicago residents who saw the need to use their individual talents and collective desire to improve the lives of those less fortunate in their community, giving birth to ‘Lions’ and the creed ‘We Serve’.

The club in Northcliff appropriately followed suite. “In keeping with this, Lions Club of Northcliff are active in service projects that benefit the poor, elderly, disabled, displaced and orphaned, mainly in the Northcliff and surrounding areas,” said Wise. He divulged that a few of the organisations receiving support through fundraising events, food collections, social interaction and extra-mural activities include: Ann Harding Cheshire Home, the area around Claremont with weekly soup supply, Footprints Orphanage in Honeydew, Montgomery Haven and Abraham Kriel Childcare.

Lions Club of Northcliff was started 50 years ago. Their meetings were initially held in Northcliff and have now, for the past three years, been held at Linden Bowling Club.

The club’s annual favourite activity along with residents of Forest Farm Centre, is the 5km wheelchair push at the 702 Walk the Talk. “For a number of years, Lions Club of Northcliff have managed a massive jumble sale that is a highlight and significant source of income for the Firlands Children’s Home fetê,” Wise added.

He said a great way to discover more about the club’s service and socialising would be to join the Lions Club of Northcliff when they collect non-perishable foods and sell second-hand books on the last Saturday morning of each month outside Pick ‘n Pay in the Heathway Centre.
