Broken toilets at hospital

PARKTOWN – The Gauteng Department of Health says that there is continuous maintenance of infrastructure in all their facilities.

The condition of toilets at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital has improved but can still get better.

This according to DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom, who said that there has been an improvement in the cleanliness of toilets but many of the toilets remain broken. “This is my assessment following my visit to the hospital after receiving a written reply by the Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature on the state of toilets there,” said Bloom.

According to Mahlangu, 46 of the 1 822 toilets at the hospital are not flushing and they were to be fixed by the end of May. She said that the toilets are clean as there are twice daily check-ups by supervisors to assess the state of cleanliness.

“I checked about 20 of the male toilets on the Hospital Street level of the hospital and I can confirm that they are generally clean,” said Bloom. However, there were four broken toilets, two had no toilet paper dispensers, two more did not have toilet paper and one toilet was missing a seat.

Bloom said that this shows that there are still toilet problems although it is much better than a year ago when patients sent him dreadful photos of dirty toilets. “I hope that the broken toilets are fixed as soon as possible and cleanliness standards are maintained at this is a major hospital that is visited by thousands of patients a day.

The Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Steve Mabona commented, “We can assure you that all the toilets were fixed by end of May. It should be noted that there is a continuous maintenance of infrastructure in all our facilities as and when needed.”
