De La Salle Celebrates Africa Day

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School celebrate the beauty of Africa Day.

Bold colours and a great need to celebrate our continent’s most unique attributes and diversity was the call of duty for pupils of De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School.

The special day is celebrated across Africa on 25 May. To celebrate the day, pupils wore clothing that represented their culture.

According to the Africa Day site the day is the annual commemoration of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which is now known as the African Union (AU). The union was put in place to address challenges faced like armed conflict, climate change and poverty.

On the day pupils were not only dressed beautifully in their traditional outfits but they also paid homage to Mother Mary, the Patroness of South Africa by taking a picture in front of her statue.

Deputy head of the junior school, Carren Ilsely said that she was proud of the vast diversity of heritage and community. “It was so exciting for the children to wear their traditional outfits to school – and very interesting for them to learn about different cultures,” said Ilsley.

The pupils of De La Salle were asked to wear an item of clothing or accessories, representing their culture. Pupils and staff came in traditional outfits, including Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans, Nigeria, Indian and Malawi.
