ANC members burn DA T-shirts at rally in Windsor

WINDSOR EAST – DA leader and mayoral candidate visits Windsor East to talk about their challenges.

ANC members burnt DA T-shirts at a rally the DA was hosting in Windsor on 21 May.

DA members and residents marched from the Windsor Recreation Centre to the Spar at the corner of Dukes Avenue and Beatrice Street. When they were at the Spar they noticed about 10 to 15 ANC members who had gathered around at the corner and they were burning DA T-shirts. According to a homeless man of Windsor, known as Dun, the ANC members took his DA T-shirt and burnt it.

The DA members gathered and walked back to the recreation centre. “Fortunately, no one was harmed and it did not turn violent,” said Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane and DA mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba visited Windsor East to address and engage with the residents of Windsor about the drug issues in the area. “Windsor is an area that is highly affected by unemployment and subsequently, drug abuse,” said Maimane. He mentioned that the overcrowding, drug use, and hawkers are adding fuel to the problems at hand and are also speeding up the urban decay that has been happening in the suburb.

Mashaba, who also visited Windsor a couple of weeks earlier identified that the abuse of drugs such as nyaope, kat, and heroin have increased dramatically over the past few years. He said that the DA has a plan for Johannesburg – a plan to fight crime, reduce drug abuse and create jobs.

Van Zijl said that Mashaba saw for himself what the state of Windsor was and that is why he returned with the DA leader.

Ex-ANC member and now DA member and Windsor East resident, Lebogang Dibutle, said that the ANC is intimidated by the growth of the DA in Ward 98. She added that this is intimidating the ANC members. “The community said that they wanted change. The ANC promised them jobs, but after they vote for them, the ANC disappears,” she said.
