Westbury shooting victim dies in hospital

WESTBURY – Suspects have been arrested in connection with the shootings in Westbury.

A man who was shot in Westbury has succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital on 20 May.

According to a resident who asked to stay anonymous, a woman who was shot during the same incident is still in hospital awaiting multiple surgeries.

Following two shooting incidents that happened last week, Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn confirmed that shootings are occurring more than usual in Westbury.

Two separate incidents happened where a couple and a 17-year-old boy were shot. The couple was found in their driveway on 15 May, at the corner of Florida and Kretzschmar streets, with 15 bullet cartridges on the ground nearby. The woman had one gunshot wound while the man was shot several times. The teenage boy was found shot on 16 May in Westbury Ext 3, after witnesses said that he was being chased by three suspects in a black VW Golf.

WO De Bruyn said that there have made several arrests, all connected to the recent shootings. “The shootings are still under investigation,” he said, adding that police are following up on leads and are expected to make more arrests as they have identified more suspects.

Ward 82 Councillor Susan Stewart said that there has been an increase in shootings in her ward. “This has been going on in my ward for some months now,” commented Stewart.
