Cyclists swap cycling gear for overalls

FAIRLAND – The Arola Cycle tour members assist in the upgrade of the Florida Fire Station.

Arola Cycle tour members helped revamp the Florida Fire Station. The fire station revamp was an important task to the cycle team as the station assisted them in their cycle tour.

The tour members are known for their grand cycle tour that spanned three days. They cycled from the Mosaïek Church in Fairland to Bloemfontein to raise funds for Bibles for people who could not afford to buy one.

Arola’s media representative, Lizette Driescher said the aim of the cycle tour had always been to extend their impact beyond the three tour days by getting involved in social responsibility projects. “We wish to give back to the community,” said Driescher.

She also said that the Florida Fire Station has been involved with the cycle tour for the last three years and helped supply vehicles to escort the cyclists safely through the city. “The Arola management saw the need for urgent upgrades and maintenance at the fire station,” said Driescher.

“The control and waiting rooms needed serious attention, painting, furniture and basic kitchen equipment,” said Driescher. “The cyclists decided to get involved as a way of giving back to the fire station and forging an even stronger relationship.”

She said that the cyclists and other volunteers involved provided new chairs and furniture, TVs, kitchen equipment, paint, flooring, a sliding door and many more.

“On the day the cyclists exchanged their cycling gear for overalls and mud stains for paint smears,” said Driescher. “Armed with paint rollers, sanding paper and power tools they tackled the task with as much enthusiasm as with the cycle tour.”

Driescher added that the Arola community will stay involved with the Florida Fire Station and plan further upgrades in future with the help of more role players from the private sector.

“In doing this outreach we hope to bring some comfort and joy to the brave men and women keeping our families safe every day,” concluded Driescher.
