UJ beats Wits in dramatic semi-final

AUCKLAND PARK – Local universities battle it out in the Varsity Hockey men's semi-final.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) overcame a remarkable period of scoring by Wits University in the Varsity Hockey men’s tournament in Stellenbosch to qualify for their second successive final.

The tantalisingly close semi-final was played on 16 May. Defending champions UJ will be targeting their second title in the biennial competition after winning the inaugural tournament in 2014. They will face Tuks at UJ on 23 May, after the Pretoria team beat Maties 1–0 in the other semi-final.

Wits went 4–0 up in a burst of scoring from the 26th to the 34th minute, but the champions showed their mettle by fighting back in dramatic fashion to level at 4–4 in the second half. With the scores tied at full time, a penalty shootout would determine the winner.

UJ goalkeeper, Matthew Martins held his nerve to only let one goal in, as UJ won the shootout 3–1. UJ coach, Garreth Ewing said that he was delighted with the mental fortitude of his players. “It just goes to show that hockey is played over 60 minutes and you have to just keep going. Anything can happen if you just keep plugging away.”

Wits sports officer, Erika Venter said that it was the best game Wits played in the tournament. “It is quite devastating because we were 4–0 up but credit to UJ for coming back. Both teams fought to the very end.”

After losing to Maties in the league phase, Tuks hit back in the semi-final, showing they will represent a major obstacle for the champions. “We know they are a good defensive unit and it will be a big challenge,” said Ewing.

“Finals are their own monsters, but being at home is an advantage.”
