Three people critical after two shooting incidents in Westbury

WESTBURY – Police are urgently looking for three suspects who fled in a black Volkswagen Golf.

Three residents were left in a critical condition after two separate shooting incidents in the suburb.

Two people who were believed to be a couple were found in a critical condition after a shooting at the corner of Florida and Kretzschmar Street at about 7.30pm on 15 May .

A total of 15 bullet cartridges were found on the ground next to their car that had bullet holes and smashed windows.

Netcare 911 arrived on the scene to find a 29-year-old woman and a man believed to be in his forties shot by unknown gunmen in the driveway of their home.

“The exact detail about the cause of the shooting will remain a subject for police investigation and comment,” said Netcare 911 media liaison officer Athlenda Mathe. She said that according to reports the woman sustained only one gunshot wound while the man sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“Netcare 911 paramedics worked alongside another emergency service’s paramedics on scene to stabilise the critically wounded pair before transporting them to various hospitals in Johannesburg for further medical care,” said Mathe.

Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn said, “A case for attempted murder has been opened. No suspects have been arrested yet.”

There was another shooting a day later on 16 May where a 17-year-old boy was shot multiple times in Westbury Extension 3.

The teenage boy was found in a critical condition at about 3.30pm after Netcare 911 paramedics managed to stabilise him on the scene of the crime. They then transported him to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

De Bruyn said that five bullet cartridges were found at the scene. “According to witnesses, three armed suspects were chasing the victim right before they shot him.” He said the suspects drove off in a black Golf VW with no registration plate. A case of attempted murder was opened.
