WESTDENE – Wits thrashes North West university in their bid to take home the Varsity Cup.

It was an intense hockey match between Wits University and the North West University (NWU) as they played their second matches in the Varsity Cup. Wits took home the glory with a 5–2 win over their rivals.

The match was held at the University of Johannesburg’s Astro stadium in Westdene. Wits came into the match as the underdogs having lost to NWU 9–1  when they played last year. Wits redeemed themselves by scoring in the first quarter of the match.

Wits dominated the first two quarters, leaving NWU trailing behind with one point, after securing their second point from a short corner.

NWU felt the pressure throughout the match as Wits dished out long passes that hit their mark throughout the match. NWU came back in the second half of the match with renewed energy, scoring their second goal early. However, Wits crushed their hopes early after scoring three more goals.

Wits Sport officer, Erika Venter said that her side had improved their game after their dismal performance the previous year.

“We were disappointed with last year’s results but now this team is showing us something different,” she said.

Wits player Kamal Ramburuth-Hurt, who took home the Super Striker Player of the Game award, said that he was humbled by the win, especially after being on the team that lost to NWU last year.

“All our hard work is paying off. It is a special moment for the team because it means that we have a real chance to take the cup this year,” he said.
