For the love of books

AUCKLAND PARK – Children of Fire gives books to the children of Joe Slovo informal settlement.

Every Sunday morning for the past 18 years, Auckland Park based charity, Children of Fire, has run a literacy scheme in Joe Slovo informal settlement. Recently, it was proud to present books to some of the best readers in the current class.

All the children, who range from Grade 5 to 7 in their different primary schools, were given books to encourage their continued love of reading. They were also given basic provisions to take home to their families.

Charity founder, Bronwen Jones, has written several children’s books as well as a book for mining literacy and a book about the Channel Tunnel. “Anything that encourages reading in these youngsters, can give them hope amid the most difficult living conditions,” Jones said.

Greenside Grade 12 pupil, Loide Ndeumeda (19), who currently runs the reading project, said, “I really love teaching these children. I hope that they get the chance to attend a great high school like Greenside. It has made a massive difference in my life and so I am trying to make a difference in these children’s lives.”

Children of Fire appreciates the donations of books, pencils and paper they have received from various members of the public.
