Fervour fuels sports festival

NORTHCLIFF – A glorious sports festival that catered to enthusiasts needs.

Passionate sports enthusiasts filled up Northcliff High School as they watched pupils take part in the annual Gauteng/KwaZulu-Natal sports festival. The two day event took place on 30 April and 2 May.

The festival, which is always highly anticipated, is interchanged between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Head of department for learner management, Tinus Diedericks said that each year the festival is held either in KZN or Gauteng with different schools hosting each year.

At the event this year, there were about 19 schools in total that participated. Pupils either played rugby or hockey.

Diedericks explained that the festival is based on camaraderie and team spirit, so although one team will garner more points, this event is to bring schools together and play friendly games against each other. He expressed that the festival was definitely what they had expected. “It was a huge success by all accounts, the feedback we got from visiting schools and spectators was very positive,” said Diedericks.

He also said that it is never easy to run a festival like this. “With the help of our staff and our parents association it is definitely made easy,” said Diedericks. he added that attention to detail is crucial.

Spectators who either travelled near or far were spurred on by the gusto showed by pupils who either played hockey or rugby. “I estimate that there were about 500 people who attended,” said Diedericks. Pupils played their hearts out to win but made sure to keep their team morale up and keep their respective schools proud.

Gauteng will next host the event in 2018 and the hosting school is still to be determined.
