Young talent abounds

FLORIDA PARK - Local talent stars shine at the South African National Talent Africa.

Talented pupils from local schools recently reaped the rewards of their hard work in the South African National Talent Africa (Santa) at the Promusica Theatre in Florida Park.

Pupils from Maragon Ruimsig, the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ), Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge and Laerskool Muldersdrift showed off their talent under the guidance of drama teacher, Linda Theron.

Four pupils from Maragon Private Schools Ruimsig and three pupils from DSJ were awarded Gauteng and SA colours, and secured their place as part of Team South Africa, which will represent the country in New York for the international round of the Talent America competition.

Luca Roets, Nienke Janse van Vuuren, Hanno Janse van Vuuren and Nicola Henley of Maragon Ruimsig performed as Goggas. “These Goggas are very dedicated students always willing to take on any part and to stand in when students withdraw. I am proud to say that they are part of my studio,” said Theron.

DSJ pupils and siblings Jenna, Andreas and Michael Alderton participated in many categories and came out on top each time. “Hard work always pays off. These students spent hours and hours rehearsing their monologues. I must always remind myself that English is their second language. I have to compliment Jenna, she is a very dedicated student and I have never in my teaching career come across such a young student who can deliver a dramatic monologue the way Jenna did. Her performances send goosebumps up your arms. I am proud to say these siblings are part of my studio,” added Theron.

Other members of the studio, Reinhardt and Michael Neuper from Laerskool Muldersdrift enjoyed their taste of the competition. “It was very nice to be on such a large stage,” said Reinhardt. “I definitely can recommend the experience to beginners,” added Micheal.

Zia van der Mescht from Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge also thoroughly enjoyed her experience. Her mother, Corlia van der Mescht said, “It is great exposure for children as they are all welcomed into the Talent Africa family. Talent Africa provides both the opportunity and a platform for children to perform in a friendly, caring and professional environment.”

Overall the Linda Theron Drama Studio qualified with 32 students, all of whom qualified for their SA colours to compete in New York. The studio in total won 142 gold, 50 silver and 29 bronze medals, as well as various trophies and overall awards, such as the Overall Best Drama Studio award.
