More than a family tree

VICTORY PARK – Pupils of King David Victory Park Primary School are in the running to have their projects showcased on an international platform.

Two pupils from King David Victory Park Primary School have been selected to have their work sent to Israel as part of the My Family Story exhibition.

The pupils, Liron Krawitz and Sarah Rosenthal, participated in the My Family Story project, which is run through the Beit Hatfutsot museum in Tel Aviv, Israel. The project looks at exploring a Jewish family’s story, genealogy, and traditions. Pupils create artworks to display their heritage in a simple family tree, which is meant to connect the younger generation to their family stories and the broader story of the Jewish people.

The two projects were selected at an exhibition at King David on 12 April, by Aviad Sela, director of the South Africa Israel Centre, and Lisa Perez from the South African Zionist Federation. These projects will be flown to Israel to the Beit Hatfutsot museum.

Krawitz said, “I chose the Rubik’s cube design because it ideally constructs the past and builds the future and we learn history so that we don’t make the same mistakes and we can fix the past like fixing a Rubik’s cube.”

Rosenthal discussed her project. “My whole family has been in the clothing industry, and that’s why I used the idea of a jacket. My great grandmother survived the holocaust and it says in my jacket Am Yisrael Chai which means the Jews must live,” she said.

If chosen, Krawitz and Rosenthal’s projects can be entered into an international competition and the pupils will be flown to Israel to represent South Africa and the King David Schools at an international exhibition. This will give the pupils the opportunity to meet other pupils from around the world.
