UPDATE: Pikitup is back on schedule

JOBURG – With the strike over, Pikitup's workers get back to collecting rubbish as per the schedule.

The City of Joburg’s waste management entity, Pikitup, is urging residents to keep putting out their bins and any excess waste in refuse bags on their normal collection days as per the schedule.

Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said that the waste management entity thanked all residents and business owners for their patience and continued support, while they were striving to clear the backlogs of refuse during the five-week long strike which ended on 10 April.

“Approximately 95 per cent of Pikitup depot-based workers reported to their respective depots on 11 April and they have commenced with their normal scheduled waste management services, which include refuse collection, street sweeping and litter picking,” Mashapu said.

He pointed out that the workers would continue to clear illegally dumped waste in open spaces and street corners. “We anticipate that the recovery plan will take over three weeks to complete since, in most instances, the normal operations was slowed down due to excess waste which has accumulated for five weeks,” he explained.

He added that Pikitup was grateful to members of the public who offered their services to assist in the various clean-up efforts throughout the strike.

“We continue to urge communities across the City of Joburg to call the 24-hour hotline, should they wish to get involved in clean-up initiatives. Illegal dumping can also be logged on the JRA Find and Fix App which can be downloaded to cell phones for free from the Google Play Store,” he concluded.
